DTG vs DTF Printing: Choosing a Method for Your Clothing

Discuss your clothing order

The right print method depends on your artwork, the garment and how you want the finished piece to feel. A bold chest graphic and a faded photographic design ask different things of a print. Start with the result you want, then confirm the technique available for the exact style, color and placement.

For international orders, Exposure Apparel reviews the proposed garment and artwork through an inquiry. You do not need to choose a printing acronym before contacting us. Send the design and explain what matters most: color coverage, a softer feel, fine detail or a particular position.

What DTG printing does

Direct-to-garment printing applies ink directly to the garment. It is commonly considered for cotton-rich clothing and artwork with tonal detail, photographs or gradual color changes. Fabric color and surface texture influence the result, so the same file can look different on two garments.

If a worn-in graphic or a print that feels integrated with the fabric is part of your brief, ask whether DTG suits the selected style. A digital preview can explain placement, but it cannot let you feel the printed surface. For a new range where that feel is central, discuss the options in our samples and digital proofs guide.

What DTF printing does

Direct-to-film printing transfers a printed design from film onto the garment using heat and pressure. It can produce an opaque graphic with strong color coverage and is used across a range of compatible fabrics. The print forms a layer on the surface.

Coverage matters as well as the method name. A small chest design and a large solid front panel can feel different even when they use the same technique. Fine isolated details and edges that fade into transparency also deserve a closer file check. We can review these features without changing your artwork before you approve it.

Three questions that help narrow the choice

  • What is in the design? Identify photographs, solid shapes, fine lettering, gradients and any areas intended to remain transparent.
  • What is the garment? Share the style name and color. Cotton, polyester and blends need the method and print settings appropriate to that item.
  • Where will it be printed? List each proposed position and approximate width. Seams, pockets, zips and the garment size affect the usable space.

These questions are useful whether you are planning custom T-shirts, printed hoodies or a mixed group order. They also prevent a design being approved for one garment and assumed to work unchanged on every other style.

Check the finished arrangement

Review the proposed print size and position on each garment type. Ask how the design will be handled across the smallest and largest sizes in your order. Do not assume that a chest graphic automatically grows with every size or that a sleeve position is available on every item.

For color-sensitive work, provide the original file and any brand reference with your inquiry. A screen image is a reference, not a promise of an exact fabric or ink match. Read the artwork file guide before preparing the production file.

Ask about your design

Send a print-method inquiry with your garment examples, artwork link, quantity, destination and preferred placements. We will confirm the available option and quote for the proposed configuration before an order proceeds.
