Artwork File Guide for Custom T-shirts and Hoodies

Discuss your clothing order

A useful artwork file shows exactly what should be printed at a size that preserves the detail you need. Start with the original design file where possible, rather than a screenshot of a logo or a compressed image from social media. Include a preview so we can see the intended result alongside the production artwork.

You can inquire before every detail is final. Tell us the garment, print position and approximate dimensions you have in mind. We can then check the file against the proposed clothing and identify what needs confirming before a digital proof is approved.

Match resolution to the intended print size

For an image made from pixels, its usable resolution depends on how large it will be printed. As an example, an image 3,000 pixels wide placed at 10 inches wide contains 300 pixels per inch. The same image at 20 inches wide contains 150 pixels per inch. Enlarging the print changes the effective resolution.

Changing a file's DPI label does not recreate detail missing from a small image. Keep the largest original version available and tell us the intended printed width. File suitability also depends on the artwork and method, so a number alone is not an approval. The DTG and DTF guide explains why edges, coverage and transparency matter.

Choose the background deliberately

A transparent PNG can be useful when the garment should show around the design. A photograph or graphic with an intentional rectangular background may need that background retained. The important question is what should appear on the clothing, rather than whether a file looks tidy on a white screen.

Inspect the edges for unwanted borders, stray pixels and soft halos. Also check empty space around the artwork: the dimensions of the whole file can differ from the dimensions of the visible graphic. State the width you mean and whether it refers to the artwork itself or the full canvas.

Keep editable originals and a clear reference

If your designer has an original vector or layered file, keep it with the project. Send a shareable link and a normal image preview with the inquiry; we can confirm the production format required for your chosen garment. Do not flatten or overwrite your only editable copy just to send a quick preview.

For text, provide the correct spelling in the artwork and in your written instructions. If names, roles or numbers vary, attach a final list that identifies each variation. Describe any required color reference, but do not expect a phone display to serve as an exact printed-color standard.

Give every placement its own instruction

  • Name the garment and color associated with the file.
  • List front, back or other requested positions separately.
  • State the approximate artwork width in centimetres or inches.
  • Identify which file version is current and which versions are references only.
  • Use artwork you own or have permission to reproduce.

A zip hoodie needs its layout reviewed around the zip and pockets. A smaller garment may also have a different usable print area. Our proof checklist helps you check those details before approval.

Send the files with your inquiry

Use the artwork-link field in the international inquiry form and make sure the linked files are accessible. Include quantity, destination and any event date. If you are collecting different designs from a group, the group-order guide explains how to keep the files and size list aligned.
